So far it's been about two weeks in Costa Rica, and I say my espanol is improving slightly everyday. I can say a few basic things like 'Necessita el bano' (I need the toilet), or 'Yo tengo mucho hambre!' (Feed me!!).
During our homestays I've tried to piece together the meagre Spanish that I know to communicate with the family members. Needless to say, if you get some words wrong - they do often end disastrously, or hilariously.
For example:
Papa with an accent means 'father'
Papa with no accent means 'potato'
What I've been saying: 'Gee, I really miss my potato back home.'
Amiga means 'friend'
Cormiga means 'ant'
What I've been saying: 'Ouch! Stupid friends are biting me!'
Mano means 'hand'
Mono means 'monkey'
What I've been saying: 'Hello, where can I wash my monkey?'
Naranja means 'orange'
Arana means 'spider'
What I've been saying: 'Mmm, can I please have some juice of spider?'
Anyway, I'll post more 'Spangrish' as I go along - I'm sure I'll have a lot more of them!!
Yesterday I had a fever, and I've broken out in attractive red spots all over my body. It's really embarassing walking around like I have a highly contagious and debilitating disease (mostly because I keep trying to hide myself whenever I go out!!) Yuk. It hasn't been the best week - but for the Spanish part, it's getting better!!
Off to my next activity - cooking lessons!! Mmmmmm.......more rice and beans perhaps?
